ITB with AB #12: Comic Books vs. TV Shows

What's in the Box:

This week inside the box I talk about five Walking Dead characters that differ from comic book to tv show. This mostly deals with their length and/or death in each medium with an exception, so there will be spoilers for those not caught up on the series. Also with the recent release and in my opinion the huge success of the new Daredevil series on Netflix, I will be share my top five comic book franchises that need TV adaptions. So open up the box and enjoy!

Walking Dead Box:

I love both the comic version and television version of The Walking Dead and I will admit I didn't start reading the graphic novel until after watching season one of the TV show. With that being said one of my favorite parts of the show is seeing the different ways they have events occur in the show compared to the novel and the elements that are essential and have to appear in both such as Shane's death and the group finding the prison. With that being said I'm going to talk about some of the biggest character differences from novel to TV. I'm mainly focusing on character deaths so anyone who isn't caught up with the show this is your Official ITBwithAB Spoiler Warning!

I'm going to start with my honorable mention this week.

HM. Daryl Dixon: He isn't in the graphic novel and will probably never make an appearance.

I like to think that in the graphic novel the Dixon brothers are off somewhere on there own living off the land and killing as many walkers as they want.

5. Dale: He does serve as a voice of reason in both the novel and the show he just gets to hold that role a bit longer in the novel. In the show aspects of the Dale character get transferred over to Herschel once the character, played by Jeffrey DeMunn, is killed in season 2. In the novel Dale does share a short lived relationship with Andrea before he is bitten which he hides from the group.

He wonders into the wilderness to die but is knocked out by hunters who cut off his leg and eat it. He gets rescued by the group but after dying in his sleep he is shot in the head by Andrea to prevent him from turning. This is the fate of Bob on the TV show. On the show Dale has his guts ripped out in season 2 and is mercy killed by Daryl.

4. Rick: To be honest there isn't a whole lot of difference between novel Rick and show Rick. The biggest difference is the fact that The Governor cuts off his freakin' hand the first time they meet! That's right! Rick from about halfway through the prison story to current time in the novel has no right hand.

Other differences for Rick's character deal with his family. Lori survives Judith's birth in the novel and actually makes it to the end of the prison story arch. However she is shot and killed from behind during the second attack on the prison and falls on Judith killing her as well. Carl even hits some bad luck during the Alexandria story arch as he gets and eye shot out.

Rick does end up starting a relationship with Andrea in the novel which still continuing.

3. Tyreese: In the novel Tyreese shows up shortly after Shane's death (Shane dies before they reach the farm in the novel). He pretty quickly fills the best friend role for Rick, which never gets close to happening in the show. Tyreese arrives to the group with his daughter and her boyfriend.

Tyreese has a relationship with Carol in the novel but ends up cheating on her with Michonne. Ultimately he is killed in the same fashion as Herschel in the show. Knelt down and decapitated by The Governor with Michonne's katana. In the show I just felt Tyreese never really found a role and his death in season 5 just seemed like a really bad acid trip.

2. Andrea: In the novel Andrea was a badass sharpshooter. A role that it seems has been taken over by Sasha on the show. In the novel she has a relationship with Dale until his death and currently with Rick.

On the show Andrea does more whining that anything else and she almost kills Daryl!! She has more of a father/daughter relationship with Dale and she forms a very close bond with Michonne.

1. Carol: The biggest character difference by far! Although she starts of similar by the time we reach season 5 Carol has evolved into a hardcore badass who as no problem threatening a small boy.

In the novel she is more of a flirtatious and emotionally fragile woman. She ultimately commits suicide by letting a zombie bite her after Tyreese cheating on her and being rejected when she suggested a relationship with both Lori and Rick.

Comic Book Box:

Before I start my list of comic book franchises that should receive tv show adaptions I would just like to suggest that anyone who has a Netflix account needs to check out Daredevil. The series is amazing and sucks you in very quickly. Now for other comics that need shows!

5. Y: The Last Man: In this post-apocalyptic story where a plague simultaneously kills all mammals with a Y-chromosome. Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand are the only exceptions to this.

There have been talks of this being developed into a movie for a long time now but I think television is a better place for it.

4. B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense): For anyone who has seen Hellboy the B.P.R.D. is the organization he works for. This could make for a really cool Horror style cop drama.

The show could follow Abe, Liz, and Krauss with occasional cameos from Hellboy.

3. The Punisher: With the success of Daredevil which is a darker and gritter comic tv show I think it's finally time for a Punisher show. I would love if they somehow involved Lexi Alexander (director Punisher: War Zone) in the development.

Although I would love to see Ray Stevenson return to the role for a show I think they should revisit the origin story of the character.

2. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: I may be one of the few people who enjoyed the movie that came out in 2003 staring Sean Connery. My biggest problem with it is that I wanted more from the characters.

With the success of Penny Dreadful, a show that feels very similar to this, I believe these characters could lead to a successful series.

1. 100 Bullets: This franchise was almost a show once already. David S. Goyer (co-writer of the Dark Knight) was working on it for Showtime back in 2013 before it was turned down. There are still rumblings about it being developed into a movie.

With a huge array of characters this film noir style story could be huge...if done right. The simple explanation of the story is that Agent Graves gives people the chance to exact revenge on someone who has wronged them by giving the person a briefcase containing a gun and 100 untraceable bullets.
